Wachovia Championship Announces Contract Extension

PGA TOUR Coming to Charlotte through 2010

CHARLOTTE N.C., February 16, 2005 – Regional sports fans have reason to celebrate today as officials from the Wachovia Championship announced a contract extension that will bring the PGA TOUR to this area through the year 2010.

“This is an exciting day for everyone involved with the Wachovia Championship,” said tournament director Kym Hougham. “The support we have received from Wachovia is second to none on the PGA TOUR and we are extremely grateful to have this kind of commitment from our title sponsor. Also, the PGA TOUR has been very supportive of our vision to make this a great Championship in an effort to raise significant charitable funds.

"Certainly, we could not conduct this event without the tireless efforts of our volunteers, the unselfish and gracious hospitality by the members at Quail Hollow Club, the spirit of our corporate partners and the support of some of the finest sports fans in the country," added Hougham. "This commitment by Wachovia and Quail Hollow Club will allow a great sport with model athletes to be a part of this community for years to come."

Now embarking on its third year at Quail Hollow Club, the $6.0 million Wachovia Championship has one of the largest purses on the PGA TOUR. The Charlotte area has so embraced the Championship it has been a sellout the last two years and has attracted many of the world’s top golfers to Charlotte, including 2003 champion David Toms, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and 2004 champion Joey Sindelar.

“As the title sponsor of the Wachovia Championship, Wachovia is honored to be a part of this exciting announcement,” said Wachovia Chairman and CEO Ken Thompson. “We have enjoyed being involved with a spectacular tournament that not only provides an excellent golf event but also gives back to the community. We are proud that Charlotte and the surrounding area has one of the top events on the PGA TOUR schedule.”

“Without question, the Wachovia Championship has established itself as a tremendously successful tournament in just two years,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem said. “Not only is this a tribute to Wachovia’s commitment as title sponsor and Quail Hollow Club’s as the host site, but points to the outstanding support from the entire Charlotte area. We are extremely pleased to announce this extension today, guaranteeing the PGA TOUR’s presence in Charlotte and significant charitable giving over the next six years.”

The 2005 Wachovia Championship will be held May 2-8 and in 2006 Championship week will be May 1-7. The PGA TOUR schedule has not been released for the duration of the Wachovia Championship extension.

“We are thrilled the players love the golf course and the amenities our club offers them while competing here the first week in May,” said Quail Hollow Club president Johnny Harris. “I certainly want to thank the members of Quail Hollow Club for their patience, support and great energy toward the Wachovia Championship. We will continue to work hard and find ways to make the Wachovia Championship a memorable experience for the patrons,  players and their families as they come to Quail Hollow Club through 2010.”
