Powerful 156-Player Field is Set to Play in $5.6 Million Wachovia Championship
Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson Head a Lineup that Includes 20 of the Top-30 2004 Leading Money Winners and Five of the Top Six World-Ranked Players in Event at Quail Hollow, May 3-9
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Tiger Woods, a six-time PGA TOUR Player of the Year, including the last five in a row, and the undisputed No. 1 player in the world, Vijay Singh, the winner of the 2003 PGA TOUR money title and No. 2 player in the world, and Phil Mickelson, the reigning Masters champion and No. 6 player in the world, head a deep and powerful 156-player field for the second annual Wachovia Championship, which will be played at Quail Hollow Club, May 3-9.
The Wachovia Championship, a 72-hole tournament that features a $5.6 million purse, will pay $1,008,000 to the winner. The tournament will be televised by USA Network on Thursday, May 6 (4 – 6:00 p.m., ET) and Friday, May 7 (3 – 6:00 p.m., ET), and by CBS on Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9 (3 – 6:00 p.m., ET).
David Toms will defend his Wachovia Championship title against an illustrious field which includes 20 of the top-30 money winners in 2004 and five of the top-six players on the World Ranking.
There are also 17 players in the field who have combined to win 32 major championships. Woods, the winner of this year’s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, heads the major championship winner list. The other major champions are: Rich Beem, Mark Brooks, Ben Curtis, Lee Janzen, Bernhard Langer, Davis Love III, Shaun Micheel, Mickelson, Mark O’Meara, Corey Pavin, Nick Price, Singh, Jeff Sluman, Curtis Strange, Toms and Mike Weir.
FIELD IS SET FOR WACHOVIA CHAMPIONSHIP
Proceeds from all PGA TOUR events benefit charities selected by the tournament organization. The nationally known educational foundation, Teach For America, has been selected as the primary charitable recipient of the Wachovia Championship for 2004, in keeping with Wachovia's strong commitment to furthering education opportunities in local communities.
