Adam Scott, Sergio Garcia, Peter Lonard, Stuart Appleby, Mike Weir Lead International Flavor at This Year's Wachovia Championship
A long list of impressive International players who will be competing in the Wachovia Championship next week.
CHARLOTTE N.C., April 28, 2005–Australia’s Adam Scott and World No.6, fresh off a win last week at the European Tour’s Johnnie Walker Classic, added his name to a long list of impressive International players who will be competing in the Wachovia Championship next week.
Spanish sensation Sergio Garcia and Canada’s only Masters Champion Mike Weir committed early this week to play in this year’s PGA TOUR event that returns to Charlotte May 2-8, at Quail Hollow Club.
Moreover, Peter Lonard, the Australian who captured his first TOUR victory at the MCI Heritage in Hilton Head and Australian Stuart Appleby, who won the Mercedes Championship to start the TOUR season, have added their names to the field of 156 players who will be competing for the $6 million purse in a few days.
The Wachovia Championship will have 37 International players representing 14 countries.
“The PGA TOUR is very international and it is exciting when players from Europe, Japan, Australia, South Africa and other parts of the world choose to come to Charlotte and compete at Quail Hollow Club, “ said Wachovia Championship Tournament Director Kym Hougham.
Zimbabwe’s Nick Price leads the group with 18 PGA TOUR victories and 24 International titles—including two PGA Championships and a British Open title. Appleby has won six TOUR titles and twice around the world while Garcia has five PGA TOUR titles and nine around the world. Mike Weir, the 2003 Masters champion and winner of seven PGA TOUR titles, returns to the Wachovia Championship for the third straight year.

Proceeds from the 2005 Wachovia Championship will benefit Teach For America, a national education foundation that provides a corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit to teach for two years in underserved urban and rural public schools.
The Wachovia Championship’s $6 million purse is one of the highest on the PGA TOUR, guaranteeing the winner in excess of $1 million. Recently, the Wachovia Championship signed an agreement with the PGA TOUR to hold the event in Charlotte through the year 2010.
