CHARLOTTE N.C., April 26, 2007 – Tiger Woods added his name to the field today as 29 of the top 30 players in the world prepare to compete next week in the fifth Wachovia Championship, April 30-May 6 at Quail Hollow Club.
Woods, who has not played since the Masters, will make his third appearance at Quail Hollow Club. Woods finished tied for third in 2004 and tied for 11th in 2005.
This year, the world's No. 1 player must negotiate a field of competitors and a golf course that could be one of the strongest combinations so far on the 2007 PGA TOUR.
All of the current top ten players in the world will attend the sold out Wachovia Championship. Following Woods in the top ten is: Jim Furyk, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Henrik Stenson, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, Geoff Ogilvy and Padraig Harrington.
Not competing is No. 13 Paul Casey, who is not a member of the PGA TOUR.
"In our first four years we have had all of these players compete in the Wachovia Championship at some time or other. But this year they will all be here at the same time," said Wachovia Championship Executive Director Kym Hougham. "We certainly are glad Tiger decided to join the group this year and I know the patrons will be excited to see this great field compete on one of the toughest golf courses on the PGA TOUR."
A majority of the proceeds from the 2007 Wachovia Championship will benefit Teach For America, a national education foundation that provides a corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit to teach for two years in underserved urban and rural public schools. In four years, the Wachovia Championship has donated $5.7 million to charities.
The Wachovia Championship's $6.3 million purse is one of the highest on the PGA TOUR, guaranteeing the winner in excess of $1 million. In 2005, the Wachovia Championship signed an agreement with the PGA TOUR to hold the event in Charlotte through the year 2010.
