Merchandise Sales

This Committee is currently full.

Volunteers will be assigned to help the Quail Hollow Club golf staff at the Official Merchandise tent. There are various positions to choose from, all which include standing. Responsibilities include:

  • Stock and sell merchandise at the Official Merchandise tent
  • Staff the merchandise check-tent where patrons may check purchased merchandise or personal items at no charge—located next to the Official Merchandise tent

Volunteers are needed Monday through Sunday. There are three shifts (each 4.5 hours with a 20 minute break) per day starting at 7:00am and ending when the tent closes at approximately 7:00pm. Consumer sales experience is preferred, but excellent customer service and a friendly, helping attitude are a must!

Although the Wachovia Championship isn't the only PGA TOUR event that brings out the Herald and Jo Hughes volunteer team, it does seem to be one of their favorites.

"The Championship is local so we get to go home every night. We also like what the money goes for," says Jo Hughes a retired church secretary originally from the Detroit, Michigan area.

The Championship has raised $4.2 million for charity in the past three years, and those fundraising efforts support youth education. It is one of the main reasons that Herald and Jo Hughes so willingly volunteer their time with the tournament. Both are actively involved with Merit Academy in Indian Trail, North Carolina, a special needs school that assists children with learning differences.

There are additional reasons they volunteer. "You get to meet a lot of nice people. Everybody comes through the merchandise tent," explains Herald, a retired actuary. They also like how the volunteers are treated, not to mention the uniforms.

During the heaviest traffic days of the tournament, Merchandise Sales Ambassadors put great effort in managing the flow of the crowd. "People like to double back and go out the front of the tent."

Without volunteers like Herald and Jo, things could quickly become messy. For example, these Ambassadors must stop food and drink from entering the tent, to protect the merchandise. Additional duties include assisting the vendors with stocking the shelves, attending the needs of shoppers, and even identifying sales trends or requests.

"The very first year," according to Jo, "there were few items for children, but it was something that shoppers wanted, so we let the committee know."

This couple has volunteered with the Merchandise Sales committee since the first year of the Championship. They have plenty of experience, but how do they prepare? In the weeks leading up to the event they visit www.wachoviachampionship.com to review course details. It's just one example of how this pair and other Merchandise Ambassadors take additional measures to make the Wachovia Championship an event to remember.
