Standard Bearers

This Committee is currently full.

A Standard Bearer's job is to show the gallery who is playing in their assigned player group and to display the par relative scores. Volunteers are needed Wednesday through Sunday. Volunteers are expected to:

  • Have the ability to walk five miles carrying a five pound sign for an assignment lasting approximately five hours
  • Commit to at least three of the five days during the tournament, Wednesday through Sunday
  • Understand golf rules, etiquette, and be customer service oriented

There will be a mandatory clinic to attend prior to tournament. It is mandatory that any new member to the committee volunteer for the Wednesday Pro-Am to re-enforce responsibilities and etiquette.

Note: This committee has a very high retention rate from year to year, which is good, as the PGA TOUR rates us based on retention. It is likely that less than five new people will be added to this committee. Several hundred people usually choose this committee as their top choice.

Standard Bearers are the volunteers you see walking the course with the players, holding up signs, or standards, that let spectators know a player's latest scores. A Standard Bearer is expected to walk a full 18 holes-which takes about five hours-three times during tournament week.

Trudie McGovern-Keenan, an avid golfer and Standard Bearers Committee co-chair, is thrilled about the opportunity to put more than a decade of her own experience managing Standard Bearers to use at the Wachovia Championship. But there is more to being a Standard Bearer than just holding up a sign, Trudie explains. Volunteers must also be familiar with the rules of golf etiquette.

"It is very important for the Standard Bearers to present themselves in a very professional manner. They are in direct view of the public gallery, the TV cameras, and within earshot of the golfers," she notes. "From my past experience, there can be praise or complaints about the conduct of Standard Bearers. The aim of our committee is to only hear praise."

With a seasoned volunteer like Trudie at the helm, there is no doubt that the Standard Bearers will be just one of the many reasons the Wachovia Championship is seen as a world-class event for years to come.
